Leaving Kampala we head through the scenic farm land to the Kibale Forest National Park. This afternoon we visit the Bigodi Wetlands Sanctuary rich in primate, bird and butterfly species. We take a three hour walking trail through the wetlands with a local guide who will give you a interesting overview of life in the swamp. This evening take a optional guided night walk in the forest looking for nocturnal primates such as the bush baby.
Day 2: Kibale Forest to Queen Elizabeth National Park
This morning we take a included forest trek following the spoor of a wild but habituated group of chimpanzee. Kibale Forest boasts 13 different species of primate, more primates than in any other East African forest. While in the forest your knowledgeable guides will point out a range of primates, birds, plants and animal spoor. After lunch we cross the equator and move on to Queen Elizabeth National Park where we will stop for two nights. We take an evening game drive on arrival.
Day 3: Queen Elizabeth National Park
We spend a full day in the park. Your choice, an included early morning game drive, or optional walking safari in the Kyambura Gorge populated by habituated chimpanzees. After the game drive or walk we may relax during the heat of the day with lunch and a swim at the beautiful Mweya Lodge before heading out for an afternoon boat cruise up the Kazinga Channel. Highlights of this cruise include good elephant, hippo and buffalo sightings plus the spectacular bird life such as the Pink Backed Pelican and Crowned Crane. Keep your eyes peeled for monitor lizards on the banks and the occasional crocodile. We then game drive on our way back to our camp.
Day 4: Queen Elizabeth National Park to Bwindi
After a final morning game drive in the park we pack up camp and head off to our gorilla tracking area. We will track the mountain gorilla in the Bwindi Forest in Uganda. We slowly wind our way up through beautiful steep sided valleys. Every spare space is used for agriculture in the densely populated area, with up to 90 people being supported on every acre by subsistence agriculture. These patchwork mountains dotted with small thatched villages make today one of our most scenic drives. We keep climbing until we get to the protected tropical rain forest where the mountain gorillas live.
Day 5: Bwindi National Park – Gorilla trek
Your gorilla trek is sure to be the highlight of your tour. Sitting with the mountain gorilla is one of the most amazing wildlife experiences you will ever have. A dominant male Silverback can weigh over 200 kilos, is the largest living primate, and he will control our meeting as well as deciding when his group will eat, sleep and move on. His females care for their young with affection and playfulness but also with discipline. They are very curious, and are capable of making over 25 different vocalisations including smiles, chuckle and purr. Communication also includes posturing, chest beating and if all else fails the charge! The privilege of spending time with this family group is an experience that will never leave you.
Day 6: Bwindi to Lake Mburo National Park
We leave the forest and wind our way back down the mountain valleys to Lake Mburo National Park arriving at the park in the afternoon in time for a game drive then sun downers on the lakeside. This small gem of a park with rolling hills and idyllic lake shores supports a rich diversity of habitat. Forest galleries, swamps, rich acacia woodland and grassland all support a wealth of wildlife. There are five lakes within the park boundary. The lakes supports hippo, crocodile and otter. On the fringes of the lake’s buffalo, warthog, topi, water buck, eland, and bush pig reside. Bird life abounds with over 315 species present.
